NTUC Delegation to Syria 2009

Jo Lawton, Josie Bird (Unison) and Fazia Hussain (Unite) visited a Refugee Camp in Damascus this April to research the plight of the Palestinian Refugees displaced there since 1948.

While awarded almost the same rights as Syrian Nationals, the Palestinians are among the poorest people in the country and often live in very deprived conditions.

We visited projects supported by the Jafra Youth Organisation and took action to raise money to improve the standards and facilities at a kindergarten.

This pre-school education facility was lacking in decent sewage and plumbing, with faulty electrics and a potentially dangerous recreation area.

At the Northern TUC Conference we started fundraising and have already raised £3,400.
