Message from HOPE not Hope: Can you Help us Keep the Peace?

Last week we launched a campaign to get the authorities to ban the planned English Defence League march in Tower Hamlets in early September. We believe it is totally wrong for this racist group to parade their hatred through one of Britain's largest Muslim communities.

The prospects of what could happen if the EDL march is chilling. In fact, it hardly bears thinking about. A thousand racists - chanting their anti-Muslim abuse and waving their abusive placards - marching through a predominantly Muslim community in their heart of our capital. They are coming to Tower Hamlets hoping to incite violence and I'm worried that if they march they could well achieve their goal. We must stop them.

Thousands of you have supported our campaign by signing our online petition. Now we need to take the campaign to the community itself.

If we are going to force the authorities to act we need to show that the local population is totally opposed to the march. We want to take our campaign door-to-door across Tower Hamlets. We need to explain the threat posed by the EDL and give them a chance to voice their objection. In this way we can force the authorities to ban the EDL march.

We need £3,500 to produce leaflets, posters and petition sheets for our campaign. We have produced a booklet on how communities should deal with the EDL and we want to distribute several hundred to community groups across the borough but we need the money to do this.

The stakes are high and the risks are great but this is precisely why we need to act now. We have to show the authorities that the people of Tower Hamlets will not accept this hatred in their community - quite less pay for it.

By building a huge community campaign we can make a difference. We have successfully mobilised against the EDL in Bradford and Leicester and I'm confident with your help we can do it again in Tower Hamlets.
