Massive turnout for Durham Miners Gala
Born of the town's coal mining heritage, the Durham Miners Gala has, since its inception in 1871, developed into the UK's largest unofficial miners and trade union gathering. Organised three years after the first trade union was established in 1869, the Gala, now in its 127th year, pays tribute to the past struggles of miners and continues to resonate with and inspire working people everywhere.
This year's gala saw over 120,000 in attendance parading proudly with their banners and flags through the streets of Durham. Culminating in a rally, guest speakers included Bob Crow, RMT general secretary and Len McCluskey, general secretary of Unite. One of the 33 rescued Chilean miners, Carlos Bugueno Afara, was given a rousing reception by the crowd and gave a harrowing account of the ordeal which saw him and his workmates trapped 700 metres underground at the Capiapo mine in Chile for two months in 2010.
