Labour back to roots at Durham Miners’ Gala

Tens of thousands of people flocked to the 128th Durham Miners Gala on Saturday July 14 where CWU was out in force, accompanied by a 20-foot inflatable post box.

The Gala - reportedly the biggest annual trade union gathering in Europe - is a traditional miners' event dating back to the 19thcentury. This year's headline speaker was Labour leader Ed Miliband, who is the first Labour leader for 23 years to address the Gala. He was joined by a range of Labour and trade union notables, including general secretaries Paul Kenny, of the GMB and Mark Serwotka from PCS, with Shami Chakrabarti, director of Liberty, John Hendy, the QC for Durham miners, and MP Tom Watson, who has campaigned against phone hacking.
