Its all about Education - its in the numbers

The latest statistics CWU Education & Training delivered for young members are now in. The statistics, covering the second quarter of 2011 show that 48 young activists from 30 branches attended a total of 14 different courses spread across seven venues.

The average aged of the students was 29 years and 9 months - but there was a fair sprinkling of those in their early 20s which is additional encouragement.

The members came from a wide range of occupational backgrounds, postal, telecoms and financial services. They were drawn from England, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The range of courses was from the purely industrial, such as Postal Agreements and Procedures, through to individual skills in the Chairing Meetings course, to specialist health & safety courses and the ever popular Union Skills parts 1, 2 & 3.

Most of the courses took place at our education centre in Alvescot, but venues also included Carlisle, Coventry, Wolverhampton, Doncaster, Bournemouth and Preston.

The number of young activists receiving training during this period of time is up significantly on the previous quarter - although that period did include Easter & May Day holidays and the union's Annual Conference. Encouragingly, the numbers being trained in the same quarter in 2010 were broadly similar. Also, proportionately more young women members undertake training than women members as a whole
