Into School Project – CWU Youth Activists

As a result of a CWU NW Motion carried at the NW TUC Conference, the NW TUC is re-launching the programme and looking to urgently refresh the panel of young activists.

The TUC Into schools project is aimed at extending knowledge about modern trade unionism to today's young people The approach is based on a panel of trained young trades unionists using the materials that the TUC has developed, going into schools and colleges to help run sessions alongside teachers with a range of activities that help develop the skills at appropriate stages of the curriculum whilst introducing young people to the values and realities of modern trades unionism is the best way to proceed.

The CWU NW Region has also made a sizable donation towards the administration of this initiative.

The TUC is developing an approach to attract schools that is manageable. They are seeking to identify schools and colleges that we can approach on a planned timetable.

Volunteers with the support of their branch would need to commit for a fixed number of visits per term. The TUC would then be able to identify the schools in advance and notify the partner union of the details of the visits and they would then arrange for their activist to receive the materials and make contact with the schools.

Volunteers would need to attend a training session on Friday 5 February 2010 from 9.30 - 16.00 at Manchester Trade Union Education, St John's Centre, New Quay Street, Manchester.

Please forward names, home addresses, mobile numbers and email addresses of any Youth Activists who would be willing to undertake this important work with the support of their branch and region to Carl Webb, CWU North West Regional Secretary at northwestregion@cwu.org.
