CWU showcases at UNI communicators
UNI, the global union, is holding its annual communications and campaigns conference in Madrid.
CWU, a UNI affiliate, is represented by Kevin Slocombe and John Colbert from CWU Communications and John Baldwin, CWU's head of international affairs.
The conference brings together trade union communicators and campaigns officers to share experiences and find ways to work together on international campaigns. A key aim of the conference is for the people leading communications to learn strategies from each other.
The first day is based on the theme of 'innovation in communications' with one of the lead presentations from CWU head of communications, Kevin Slocombe (pictured).
Kevin showcased
the union's website and its interactive modern communications
including CWU
TV and the eVoice publication.
Kevin said: "Unions face a growing challenge to engage more members in their key messages and to reach out to new audiences in line with UNI's mission to 'break through'". Talking of the need to be quicker with news and information Kevin added: "Workers are used to immediate 24/7 news and online tools allow us immediacy and improves relevance."
The conference continues with sessions discussing the use of social media and networking.
On Tuesday the conference changes direction with global campaigning a key topic alongside a presentation from Tunisian trade unionists. This session, billed as 'Talkin' 'bout revolution' will explain how trade unionists, young people and bloggers came together through the internet.
